Search Engine Optimization, or SEO as it is known, is a method of improving the quality or quantity of traffic that visits one’s website through the organic search engine results. This should not be confused with marketing as organic results are considered to be free or at least unpaid result whereas marketing is usually paid for.

One can look at Search Engine Optimization as a very broad concept. You can quite easily target any type of visitor to a website, but this will not make you any money. Those which are considered to be natural and honest qualify as white hat but those which are considered to be dishonest or deceiving can be classified as black hat techniques. In the middle with a little bit of both is the gray hat form of Search Engine Optimization.

Adversarial Information Retrieval on the Web was developed in 2005 as a means of fighting the consistent spamming of the internet. This group has successfully determined what one can consider to be an aggressive SEO technique and what is an honest one. As a result of this group, those webmasters who are using dishonest SEO techniques are being found and their traffic is getting banned from the search engines.
