SEO, AdWords, Social Media Oh My!

The term “Internet marketing” refers to the marketing of services and products via the World Wide Web. Internet marketing is often referred to as Web marketing, eMarketing, iMarketing, and online marketing. Regardless, Internet marketing utilizes the massive, virtual audience found on the Web as a way to gain exposure above and beyond the abilities of traditional media marketing. Through Internet marketing entrepreneurs have the ability to not only reach a large audience, but to do so in an unprecedented way.

Web marketing is an excellent resource that far surpasses traditional marketing efforts. Like all things, there are pros and cons to Internet marketing. Either way, the Web grabs the attention of an audience that might not otherwise hear about your product or service. When you fail to Internet market, you lose money.

As mentioned above, there are many different ways to marketing online. On of the more common methods is search engine optimization. SEO appears complicated at first, but it is actually very simple. When a consumer searches the Internet, he or she utilizes a search engine to search for Web sites of interest. The search is performed via a site such as Google in which the consumer enters one or more keywords. The search engine generates a list of Web sites the consumer might be interested in based on these keywords. When a marketer makes an effort to utilize the keywords used by a target audience, they improve the Web sites search engine ranking and thus traffic.

Google adwords is another groundbreaking form of Internet marketing. An advertising product by Google, adwords serves as the company’s primary source of income. In fact, the company yielded $21 billion in 2008 from adwords alone. In all, there are three ways to use adwords - text ads, banner ads, and pay-per-click (PPC). The banner ads and text ads are basically ads placed on the Internet dependent upon a target audience. The marketer establishes keywords, domain names, and demographic tops in the Google control panel to assist in selecting where ads will appear. PPC is a little different in that the marketer selects words that when selected trigger ads. These ads are paid based on the number of times they are clicked.

Finally, social media marketing is a popular form of Internet marketing that is very unique in approach. Through the interaction with online communities such as LinkedIn, YouTube, Twitter, Facebook, and Myspace, marketers generate exposure that parlays into sales. Social media marketing has two primary functions. First, it creates a way for customers to promote their favorite products and services. Secondly, consumers can submit and save links to products and links services such as Reddit, Digg, and Del.icio.us. In short, social media marketing is best defined as word of mouth marketing.

In all, Internet marketing is the new and improved form of marketing that boasts too many advantages to list in this article. In the past several years, marketers have watched as traditional marketing tactics have been replaced with online marketing. Internet marketing is not only affordable, but necessary. Without it, advertisers are missing out on potential buyers - a concept many of us cannot afford to do. There are several ways to market online. At the very least, you should have a Web site to establish an online presence.
